Self – Where do I Start?
The place to start doing genealogy is with you. You should start by having the records of your ordinances, and your birth and death dates. You may need to wait on the death date? You will need to start collecting pictures and feeling you have about life and those around you.
The focus on self is about what you want to leave to your posterity. Perhaps the most valuable thing to leave behind is knowledge. Carefully thought out and written down knowledge can bless much of your posterity. Why? Believe it or not, people aren’t going to remember everything you say and people tend to tell different people different things. For example, if you have 5 children, the oldest will tend to get more advice than the middle or youngest child. The parent often thinks that all the kids know all the information, but usually it is not the case.
Family information should be conveyed regularly in family councils and/or family home evenings. This gives the parents an opportunity to teach their children what they think is important for life. It is important to make these times fun by doing activities and not just talking.
The parents should have an outline of the things their children should be learning. If parents carefully plan out the information, it will not only be presented better, but important things are less likely to be forgotten. Don’t just rely on lesson manuals and others. Sit down and brainstorm to find out what you think is most important. This should be done prayerfully between spouses.
