National Archives and Census Information
The census is taken every ten years by the United States Federal Government. People go door to door and ask people questions about their household like occupation, income, and number of people living in the home.
The National Archives http://www.archives.gov is good place to find census information, military and personnel records, bankruptcy and court records, passenger lists, genealogy workshops information, and information on the presidential libraries.
There are locations, or satellites, around the country, so there is no need to go to Washington, DC, unless you live in the area.
