Blue Eyed Genealogy Study
According to the Blue Eyed Genealogy Study, 97% of the blue-eyed people they studied had the same set of 13 SNP mutations in the OCA2 and HERC2 genes on chromosome 1. In addition, approximately 32% of Americans have blue eyes, according to the National Ophthalmology Association.
The study conclusion was that blue eyes are a mutation that occurred approximately 5-10 thousand years ago and that most all blue eyed people came from a single individual. This may mean that if two blue eyed people get married that they are genetically closer related. However, since we all descended from Adam and Eve, it doesn’t matter all that much. According to dominant and recessive gene theory many brown eyed individuals actually carry the blue eyed gene.
The trend is that blue eyes are becoming less and less numerous as more blue eyed people marry brown eyed people.
